A smoke alarm on the ceiling can look reassuring. But the useful questions are more specific: Is there one where it is needed? Does it work? Will the person sleeping in the home notice it? And can they get out by a route that still works for them today? A carbon monoxide (CO) alarm adds another warning for a danger that cannot be seen or smelled. Walk through those questions together, one room at a time. This check is especially useful after a bedroom moves downstairs, a hearing or mobility need changes, or a family member starts helping with home upkeep. A room can have enough light and a comfortable chair yet still be awkward to use if the switch is behind the door, the thermostat is hard to read, or the nearest outlet is hidden behind heavy furniture. These controls are small parts of the home, but they are touched repeatedly. Their location matters as much as the device itself. Walk through the ordinary day with the person who lives there. Begin at the entrance to each frequently used room, then sit where they usually sit and check the bedroom route after dark. Ask which control requires a stretch, a detour, or someone else's help.
